Smooth Artist Interviews
What would be the most important piece of advice you'd impart to a young musician just starting out in the jazz/smooth jazz arena?
The advice that I would give to any young musician would be to embrace your artistry and be authentic in nature. Truly speak your truth through your music and fully express in any form your musicianship and understand that people will embrace you when you embrace yourself.
What do you find to be the most challenging aspect of recording a new album?
The most challenging aspect of recording a new album is the constant struggle with perfection. As a perfectionist, I constantly feel like there is always one additional element I can add, but over the many years I've been in the industry, I had to learn how to let go and trust the message in the music.
How would you describe what inspires you to do what you do?
I am inspired to do what I do because of my passion for life. I understand that life has many obstacles; however, my inner strength continues to pull me through and overcome.
Is being one of the few prominent women performers mostly fulfilling, or do you find it to be a challenge?
Being one of the few prominent women performers is extremely fulfilling, because I enjoy working with other women that love music and enjoy performing the way that I do. I get fulfillment by seeing women like me tell their story through music.
At what point in your life did you make the decision to become a professional musician and actually record your own albums?
I made the decision to become a professional musician at an early age as I began singing in my father's church. I developed a love for music early but as I became older I understand my voice and the genre of music that suited me.
What are some of the most important goals you have for yourself in the next five to ten years?
Some of my most important goals that I have over the next five to ten years is completing my up and coming Jazz album titled "Life Is Beautiful" scheduled for release in early 2014. I would also like to create an artist development business to help and guide up and coming vocalist, who are aspiring to get into the music industry. In addition, for now I'm looking forward to touring with other Jazz performers at home and abroad. I'm excited to spread the message of life, love and Jazz!
